Kuala Terengganu is the jumping-off point for holidaymakers to Redang Island on the Malaysian East Coast. The small town has its own charms, mainly centred around its colourful Chinatown’s main thoroughfare, Jalan Kampung Cina, which has a wealth of good eats, mainly casual local fare.
One of the must-visits here is Madam Bee’s Café, which offers a smallish menu of Terengganu-Nyonya-Chinese fare.
- Nasi Kerabu (rice tinted blue with the use of “bunga telang” blooms), garnished with finely-chopped local herbs and raw vegetable, and served with chicken curry, plus the indispensable “budu” (fermented fish sauce, similar to Cambodian “prahok”) favoured by older Terengganu residents.
- Terengganu Laksa, which is different from its Penang, Sarawak, Kelantan or Johore counterparts. The Terengganu version is fish-based, but contained fresh spices like turmeric and chillis.
